From 1 July 2025, NSW residents and businesses looking to install solar battery systems will see a shift in available rebates and incentives. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has confirmed that the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS1) scheme under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) will be discontinued and replaced with updated incentives that align with the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

🚨 What’s Changing?
Until 30 June 2025, NSW households can still choose between two rebates:
- PRCs (Peak Reduction Certificates) under the existing PDRS
- BSTC Rebate under the upcoming federal scheme
However, you cannot claim both. If you want the PRCs, your battery must be fully installed and connected before 1 July 2025. For the BSTC rebate, installations should be completed after 1 July 2025 to qualify.
🔋 New Federal Rebate: Bigger Savings + VPP Incentive
The new Cheaper Home Batteries Program, backed by a $2.3 billion federal investment, aims to make battery storage more affordable. From 1 July 2025:
- You’ll receive up to 30% off your solar battery installation cost
- Larger batteries = larger rebate (up to 50kWh per system)
- Extra incentives for connecting your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)
The VPP process has also been improved. Users can now claim 6 years of incentives upfront just by integrating their battery into a VPP.
💡 What’s a Virtual Power Plant?
A Virtual Power Plant connects your home battery to a network that supports the electricity grid during high-demand periods. It helps reduce reliance on coal and gas and earns you extra rewards for supporting clean energy.
🛑 No More Double-Dipping or Door-Knocking
Starting 1 July, battery STCs and PRCs will no longer be stackable. That means homeowners must choose one eligible rebate depending on the timing of their installation.
In addition, IPART plans to ban door-to-door sales campaigns from August 2025, ensuring NSW households receive trustworthy advice and high-quality battery solutions.
