Labor Government’s Solar Battery Program: Big Savings for Sydney Homes

Solar Energy Storage Batteries in Sydney

The Australian Labor Government has announced a transformative initiative—the Cheaper Home Batteries Program—which is set to make solar battery installation in Sydney more affordable than ever. As part of the 2025–26 Federal Budget, the program will provide $2.3 billion in subsidies to help reduce the solar battery cost in Sydney and across Australia by up to 30%.

The goal? Over one million battery installations by 2030, helping Australians store more solar power, cut electricity bills, and reduce grid reliance.

Under the new policy, eligible Sydney homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities can claim a subsidy of $370 per kWh of usable battery capacity, with household systems of up to 50 kWh qualifying. This could mean a saving of around $4,000 per installation. Systems must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready, although participation in a VPP is not mandatory.

To qualify, your property must already have solar panels installed. The program supports both grid-connected and off-grid homes, and no means testing applies—making it accessible to a wide range of residents across Sydney.

At Opera Solar Energy, we’re excited to support this policy by offering expert guidance on how to benefit from the subsidy. Our experienced team specializes in solar battery installation in Sydney, ensuring all systems are compliant with Clean Energy Council standards and are eligible for government incentives.

While some policy details are still being finalized, the program is expected to roll out from 1 July 2025. Installations prior to this date won’t qualify for rebates, so it’s crucial to plan accordingly.
